Debugging React Native Apps

Debugging React Native Apps

Debugging is an essential skill for any developer. React Native provides several tools to help you find and fix bugs in your applications. The most basic tool is the in-app developer menu, which you can open by shaking your device or pressing a keyboard shortcut in the simulator. From here, you can enable hot reloading, show the element inspector, and more.

React Native's built-in debugger lets you inspect your JavaScript code, set breakpoints, and step through code execution. When you enable debugging, your app connects to a Chrome DevTools instance running on your computer. You can use the Console tab to log messages, the Sources tab to debug your code, and the Network tab to inspect API calls.

For more advanced debugging, you can use React Native DevTools, which is a standalone application that provides a dedicated debugging experience. It includes a React DevTools-like component inspector, a profiler, and a network inspector. It is more stable than the Chrome DevTools approach and is recommended for daily development with React Native and Expo.

Expo provides additional debugging tools. The Expo Go app includes a development client that shows errors and warnings directly on your device. You can also use the Expo developer tools in your browser to view logs, inspect network requests, and manage your app. For production debugging, tools like Sentry or BugSnag can capture errors and crashes from your users' devices.
