Publishing to Google Play

Publishing to Google Play

Google Play is the official app store for Android devices. Publishing your app on Google Play gives you access to billions of Android users worldwide. The process is similar to the App Store but with some important differences. Google Play is generally more permissive with its review process, but it has its own requirements and best practices.

To publish on Google Play, you first need a Google Play Console account, which costs a one-time fee of 25 dollars. This is much cheaper than Apple's 99 dollars per year. In the Play Console, you create a new application, upload your AAB file, and fill in the store listing information. This includes the app description, screenshots, feature graphic, and category.

Google Play offers several testing tracks before you release your app to the public. Internal testing is for a small group of testers and has no review. Closed testing is for a larger group and requires a review. Open testing is available to anyone and also requires a review. After successful testing, you can promote your app to production, which makes it visible to all Google Play users.

One important difference from the App Store is that Google Play allows you to release updates to a percentage of users gradually. This is called staged rollouts. You can start with a small percentage, monitor for issues, and gradually increase the percentage if everything goes well. If you detect a problem, you can immediately halt the rollout and prevent more users from receiving the problematic update.
